Viking Global Starts Position in Berry Global Group

Per a 13G filed with the SEC, Andreas Halvorsen's hedge fund firm Viking Global now owns 5.5% of Berry Global Group (BERY) with over 7.19 million shares.

This is a newly disclosed position for the firm as they did not own any shares as of the end of the second quarter.

The filing was made due to portfolio activity on October 12th.  Berry Global was previously known as Berry Plastics.

Per Yahoo Finance, Berry Global "manufactures and distributes engineered materials, nonwoven specialty materials, and consumer packaging products. The company operates through three segments: Engineered Materials; Health, Hygiene & Specialties; and Consumer Packaging. It offers engineered materials, including stretch and shrink films, and converter films; trash-can liners and food bags; cloth and foil, splicing and laminating, flame-retardant, vinyl-coated and carton sealing, electrical, double-faced cloth, masking, mounting, OEM, and medical and specialty tapes; and food and consumer films, retail bags, and polyvinyl chloride films. The company also provides components for baby diapers and other absorbent hygiene products, feminine hygiene products, medical garment materials, substrates for dryer sheets, household cleaning wipes, filters, protective house wraps, and specialty agriculture and industrial products; components for adult incontinence, surgical drapes, face masks, corrosion protection, cable wrap, geosynthetics, and specialty filtration products; and a range of products for baby care, infection prevention, and food and household packaging. In addition, it offers containers; foodservice products, such as thermoformed polypropylene and injection-molded plastic drink cups and lids; closures and over caps comprising continuous-thread and child-resistant closures, as well as aerosol over caps; bottle and prescription containers; and extruded and laminate tubes"

Viking Global Files 13D on Urovant Sciences

Andreas Halvorsen's hedge fund firm Viking Global has filed a 13D with the SEC regarding shares of Urovant Sciences (UROV).  Per the filing, Viking now shows a 75.6% stake in the company with over 22.7 million shares, though the 13D notes that "The Reporting Persons do not directly own any Common Shares." 

The company recently completed its initial public offering (IPO).  Viking has previously invested in Roivant Sciences in 2016, a holding company that has created numerous subsidiaries, including newly public Urovant, which could explain Viking's SEC filing.  Other Roivant subsidiaries include Axovant Sciences, Myovant Sciences, and Enzyvant Sciences, to name a few.

Viking also invested in Roivant again in 2017 with an undisclosed amount of funding.  SoftBank's Vision Fund is also an investor in Roivant, but not the subsidiaries, at least that was the case as of mid-2017.  Roivant was founded by Vivek Ramaswamy.

Viking Global Discloses US Steel (X) Position

Andreas Halvorsen's hedge fund firm Viking Global has filed a 13G with the SEC regarding shares of US Steel (X).  Per the filing, Viking now owns 5.5% of the company with over 9.66 million shares. 

This is a newly disclosed equity position for the firm and the filing was made due to portfolio activity on February 27th.  This is now around a $425 million position, making it a top-20 US holding in their portfolio. 

Per Google Finance, US Steel is "an integrated steel producer. The Company is engaged in producing flat-rolled and tubular products with production operations in North America and Europe. The Company operates through three segments: Flat-Rolled Products (Flat-Rolled), U. S. Steel Europe (USSE) and Tubular Products (Tubular). The Flat-Rolled segment includes the operating results of its integrated steel plants and equity investees in the United States involved in the production of slabs, rounds, strip mill plates, sheets and tin mill products, as well as all iron ore and coke production facilities in the United States. The USSE segment includes the operating results of U. S. Steel Kosice (USSK) and its integrated steel plant and coke production facilities in Slovakia. The Tubular segment includes the operating results of its tubular production facilities, primarily in the United States and equity investees in the United States and Brazil."

Viking Global Shows Jianpu Technology Stake

Andreas Halvorsen's hedge fund firm Viking Global has filed a 13G with the SEC regarding shares of Jianpu Technology (JT).  Per the filing, Viking now owns 9.6% of the company with over 6.62 million shares.

This is a newly disclosed equity stake and the company recently completed its initial public offering (IPO) in the middle of November.  The filing was due to activity as of November 20th.

Per Bloomberg, Jianpu Technology "operates as an open platform for discovery and recommendation of financial products. The Company offers loan applications, credit card services, and sales and marketing solutions."

Viking Global Takes Parsley Energy Stake

Andreas Halvorsen's hedge fund firm Viking Global has filed a 13G with the SEC regarding shares of Parsley Energy (PE).  Per the filing, Viking now owns 7.2% of the company with over 17.8 million shares.

This is a newly disclosed equity stake as they did not show ownership on their last 13F filing as of the end of the second quarter.  This latest filing indicates activity as of October 16th.

Per Google Finance, Parsley Energy is "a holding company. The Company is an independent oil and natural gas company. The Company focuses on the acquisition, development and exploitation of unconventional oil and natural gas reserves in the Permian Basin. The Permian Basin is located in West Texas and Southeastern New Mexico and includes three primary sub-areas: the Midland Basin, the Central Basin Platform and the Delaware Basin. The Company's properties are primarily located in the Midland and Delaware Basins, where it focuses on horizontal development drilling and target various stacked pay intervals in the Spraberry, Wolfcamp, Upper Pennsylvanian (Cline) and Atoka shales. As of December 31, 2016, it had an average working interest of 87% in 166 gross (146.7 net) horizontal wells, of which 151 gross (132.4 net) are in the Midland Basin. As of December 31, 2016, the Company operated seven horizontal rigs and three vertical drilling rigs."

Viking Global Shows Deciphera Pharmaceuticals Stake

Andreas Halvorsen's hedge fund firm Viking Global has filed a 13G with the SEC regarding shares of Deciphera Pharmaceuticals (DCPH).  Per the filing, Viking now owns 8.1% of the company with over 2.47 million shares.

This is a newly disclosed public equity stake for the hedge fund, however Viking had previously invested privately in the company via Series C financing.  The filing was made due to portfolio activity on October 2nd as the company just completed its initial public offering (IPO).

Viking Global Shows Abeona Therapeutics Stake

Andreas Halvorsen's hedge fund firm Viking Global has filed a 13G with the SEC regarding shares of Abeona Therapeutics (ABEO.  Per the filing, Viking now owns 5.6% of the company with over 2.23 million shares.

This is a newly disclosed equity stake for the firm and the filing was made due to portfolio activity on September 22nd.

Per Google Finance, Abeona Therapeutics is a "clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing novel gene therapies for life-threatening rare genetic diseases. The Company’s lead programs include ABO-102 (AAV-SGSH), an adeno-associated virus (AAV) based gene therapy for Sanfilippo syndrome type A (MPS IIIA) and EB-101 (gene-corrected skin grafts) for recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB). Viking Global Takes aTyr Pharma Stake

Andreas Halvorsen's hedge fund firm Viking Global has filed a 13G with the SEC regarding shares of aTyr Pharma (LIFE). Per the filing, Viking now owns % of the company with over 2.93 million shares.

This is a newly disclosed equity position and the filing was made due to activity on August 31st.  aTyr Pharma recently issued a press release stating that they'd raised $45 million in equity financing, with Viking purchasing a block of non-voting Class X Preferred Stock at $13.25 per share, each which converts into 5 shares of common stock with various conditions.

Per Google Finance, aTyr Pharma is "a clinical-stage biotherapeutics company. The Company is engaged in the discovery and clinical development of medicines for patients suffering from severe, rare diseases using its Physiocrine biology, a discovered set of physiological modulators. The Company focuses on the development of Physiocrine-based therapeutics for the treatment of rare diseases, including facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) and limb-girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD) 2B. The Company is developing Resolaris, an intravenous protein therapeutic for the treatment of rare myopathies with an immune component (RMICs). The Company is investigating Resolaris in patients with LGMD2B. The Company is conducting approximately three open label trials in patients with early onset FSHD, in adult patients with FSHD or LGMD2B and a long-term extension study in adult patients with FSHD. Viking Global Trims Rice Energy & EnCana; Adds to Calithera Biosciences

Andreas Halvorsen's hedge fund firm Viking Global has just filed three separate 13G's with the SEC. 

Viking Global Trims Rice Energy Stake

First, Viking has disclosed that they now own 5.8% of Rice Energy (RICE) with 12 million shares.

This is a decrease of over 5.45 million shares as they previously owned 17.57 million shares at the end of the first quarter.  The filing was made due to activity on July 1st.

Rice recently received a takeover offer from EQT (EQT) and we highlighted how JANA Partners opposes the transaction.

Per Google Finance, Rice Energy is "an independent natural gas and oil company. The Company is engaged in the acquisition, exploration and development of natural gas, oil and natural gas liquids (NGL) properties in the Appalachian Basin. The Company conducts its operations through two segments: Exploration and Production, and Midstream. The Exploration and Production segment is engaged in the acquisition, exploration and development of natural gas, oil and NGLs. The Exploration and Production segment operates in the cores of the Marcellus and Utica Shales. The Company controls approximately 231,000 net acres in the Marcellus and Ohio Utica Shale cores. It operates approximately 1,164 drilling locations. The Midstream segment is engaged in the gathering and compression of natural gas, oil and NGL production of, and in the provision of water services to support the well completion activities of, Rice Energy and third parties."


Halvorsen's Firm Reduces EnCana Position

Second, Viking has also disclosed they now own 7.5% of EnCana (ECA) with 72.77 million shares. 

This is a decrease of 6.53 million shares as they previously owned 79.3 million shares at the end of the first quarter.  The filing was due to activity on July 1st.

Per Google Finance, EnCana is "an energy producer that is focused on developing its multi-basin portfolio of natural gas, oil and natural gas liquids (NGLs) producing plays. The Company's operations also include the marketing of natural gas, oil and NGLs. All of its reserves and production are located in North America. It operates through three segments: Canadian Operations, USA Operations and Market optimization. Its Canadian Operations segment includes the exploration for, development of, and production of natural gas oil and NGLs and other related activities within Canada. Its Canadian operations include Montney in northeast British Columbia and northwest Alberta and Duvernay in west central Alberta. The USA Operations include the exploration for, development of, and production of natural gas, oil and NGLs, and other related activities within the United States. The Market Optimization activities are primarily responsible for the sale of the Company's production to third party customers."


Viking Adds To Calithera Biosciences

Third, Halvorsen's firm also disclosed they now own 6.9% of Calithera Bioscience (CALA) with 2.42 million shares.

This is an increase of 114,706 shares since the end of the first quarter.  The filing was made due to activity on July 1st.

Per Google Finance, Calithera Bioscience is "a clinical-stage pharmaceutical company. The Company focuses on discovering and developing small molecule drugs directed against tumor and immune cell targets that control key metabolic pathways in the tumor microenvironment. It is engaged in developing agents that take advantage of the metabolic requirements of tumor cells and cancer-fighting immune cells, such as cytotoxic T-cells. The Company's lead product candidate, CB-839, is a critical enzyme in tumor cells. Its other product candidate, CB-1158, is being developed for hematology and oncology indications. CB-1158 is a potent and selective orally bioavailable inhibitor of the enzyme arginase. CB-839 is a selective, reversible and orally bioavailable inhibitor of human glutaminase. CB-1158 has single agent anti-tumor activity in syngeneic mouse tumor models that has been demonstrated to act through an immune mechanism. CB-1158 is being tested in a Phase I clinical trial in patients with solid tumors."

Viking Global Adds To Gulfport Energy Stake

Andreas Halvorsen's hedge fund firm Viking Global has filed a 13G with the SEC regarding its position in Gulfport Energy (GPOR).  Per the filing, Viking now owns 5.8% of the company with over 9.13 million shares.

They've boosted their position size by over 2.83 million shares since the end of 2016 when they owned 6.29 million shares.  The filing was made due to activity on March 10th.

Per Google Finance, Gulfport Energy is "an oil and natural gas exploration and production company. The Company focuses on the exploitation and acquisition of natural gas, natural gas liquids and crude oil in the United States. The Company's properties are located in the Utica Shale in Eastern Ohio and along the Louisiana Gulf Coast in the West Cote Blanche Bay (WCBB) and Hackberry fields. The Company also has an interest in producing properties in Northwestern Colorado in the Niobrara Formation and in Western North Dakota in the Bakken Formation. The Company also holds an acreage position in the Alberta oil sands in Canada through its interest in Grizzly Oil Sands ULC and an interest in an entity that operates in the Phu Horm gas field in Thailand. Andreas Halvorsen's hedge fund firm Viking Global has filed a 13G with the SEC regarding shares of Calithera Bioscience (CALA).  Per the filing, Viking now owns 7.8% of the company with over 1.6 million shares.

This is a newly disclosed equity position for Viking and the filing was made due to activity on February 8th.

Viking Global Discloses Myovant Sciences Position

Andreas Halvorsen's hedge fund firm Viking Global has filed a 13G with the SEC regarding shares of Myovant Sciences (MYOV).  Per the filing, Viking now owns 61.8% of the company with over 37.23 million shares.

This is a newly disclosed public equity position for the firm and the filing was made due to activity on December 31st.  However, Viking previously invested in private company Roivant Sciences.  Roivant has stakes in numerous other biopharma companies that have been spun-out, including Myovant.

Myovant completed its initial public offering in the latter months of 2016.

Per Google Finance, Myovant Sciences is ".a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing and commercializing therapies for women’s health diseases and other endocrine-related disorders. Its main product candidate is Relugolix. Relugolix is an oral, once-daily, small molecule that acts as a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor antagonist that binds to and inhibits receptors in the anterior pituitary gland. Inhibition of GnRH receptors decreases the release of the gonadotropins, luteinizing hormone, or LH, and follicle-stimulating hormone, or FSH, thereby decreasing the down-stream production of estrogen and progesterone by the ovaries in women and testosterone by the testes in men. It is advancing relugolix for the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding associated with uterine fibroids, endometriosis-associated pain and prostate cancer. Viking Global Boosts Calpine Stake

Andreas Halvorsen's hedge fund firm Viking Global has filed a 13G regarding its position in Calpine (CPN). Per the filing, Viking now owns 5.7% of Calpine with over 20.5 million shares.

This marks an increase of over 10 million shares since the end of the first quarter when Viking owned 10.49 million shares.  The latest filing was made due to activity on June 23rd.

Per Google Finance, Calpine is "a power generation company. The Company is engaged in the ownership and operation of primarily natural gas-fired and geothermal power plants in North America. The Company's segments include West (including geothermal), Texas and East (including Canada). In the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, the Company has generating units capable of burning either natural gas or fuel oil. The Company operates its business through various divisions and subsidiaries. The Company's portfolio consists of various types of power generation technologies, including natural gas-fired combustion turbines, which include combined-cycle plants and renewable geothermal conventional steam turbines. Its Geysers Assets located in northern California represent the geothermal power generation portfolio in the United States, as well as the producing power generation asset of all renewable energy in the state of California."

Viking Global Discloses Rice Energy Position

Andreas Halvorsen's hedge fund firm Viking Global has filed a 13G with the SEC and disclosed a new position in shares of Rice Energy (RICE).

Per the filing, Viking now owns 6.5% of the company with over 10.13 million shares.  The filing was made due to activity on April 15th.

Per Google Finance, Rice Energy is "an independent natural gas and oil company. The Company is engaged in the acquisition, exploration and development of natural gas, oil and natural gas liquids (NGL) properties in the Appalachian Basin. The Company conducts its operations through two segments: Exploration and Production, and Midstream. The Exploration and Production segment is engaged in the acquisition, exploration and development of natural gas, oil and NGLs. The Midstream segment is engaged in the gathering and compression of natural gas, oil and NGL production of, and in the provision of water services to support the well completion activities of, Rice Energy and third parties. It holds approximately 92,000 net acres in the southwestern core of the Marcellus Shale, primarily in Washington and Greene Counties, Pennsylvania, and approximately 56,000 net acres in the southeastern core of the Utica Shale, primarily in Belmont County, Ohio."

Viking Global Boosts Kite Pharma Stake

Andreas Halvorsen's hedge fund firm Viking Global has filed a 13G with the SEC regarding shares of Kite Pharma (KITE).  Per the filing, Viking now owns 5% of the company with 2.44 million shares.

This is up from the 2.2 million shares they owned at the end of 2015 and the latest filing was made due to activity on February 18th.

Per Google Finance, Kite Pharma is "a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company. The Company is focused on the development and commercialization of cancer immunotherapy products to eradicate cancer cells. The Company does this using its engineered autologous cell therapy (eACT), which is an approach to the treatment of cancer. eACT involves the genetic engineering of T cells to express either chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) or T cell receptors (TCRs). It is conducting a Phase II clinical trial of a TCR-based therapy and multiple Phase I-IIa clinical trials of CAR- and TCR-based therapies. The Company's lead product candidate KTE-C19, is a CAR-based therapy, for the treatment of refractory diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL), primary mediastinal B cell lymphoma (PMBCL) and transformed follicular lymphoma (TFL). Viking Global Files 13G on Broadcom

Andreas Halvorsen's hedge fund firm Viking Global has filed a 13G with the SEC regarding its position in Broadcom (BRCM).  Per the filing, Viking now owns 5.3% of the company with over 29.71 million shares.

Viking previously disclosed a small stake in BRCM in the first quarter of this year.  However, their most recent 13F filing shows they exited that position in the second quarter.  So now it appears that they've re-entered the name in a big way.  The filing was made due to activity on October 29th.

Broadcom received a bid from Avago Technologies (AVGO) earlier this year and it would be the biggest merger in the chip sector.

Per Google Finance, Broadcom is "provides semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications. The Company offers a portfolio of system-on-a-chip solutions (SoCs) that deliver voice, video, data and multimedia connectivity in the home, office and mobile environments. The Company operates in two segments: Broadband and Connectivity, and Infrastructure and Networking. Its solutions in Infrastructure and Networking segment include Ethernet switches and PHYs, which includes switches and fabrics; copper and optical transceivers; backplane and optical front-end physical layer devices; processors, and other Infrastructure and Networking technologies."

Viking Global Increases Pioneer Natural Resources Position

Andreas Halvorsen's hedge fund firm Viking Global has filed a 13G with the SEC regarding its position in Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD).  Per the filing, Viking now owns 6% of PXD with over 8.96 million shares

This is up from the 6.39 million shares Viking owned at the end of the second quarter.  The filing was made due to activity on October 20th.

On the other side of this trade of course has been David Einhorn who has been short PXD.

Viking Global Starts Laboratory Corp Stake

Andreas Halvorsen's hedge fund firm Viking Global has filed a 13G with the SEC regarding shares of Laboratory Corp (LH).  Per the filing, Viking now owns 5.3% of LabCorp with over 5.39 million shares.

This is a newly disclosed stake for the firm and the filing was made due to activity on October 1st.

Per Google Finance, LabCorp is "an independent clinical laboratory company in the United States. Through a national network of laboratories, the Company offers a range of clinical laboratory tests that are used by the medical profession in core testing, patient diagnosis, and in the monitoring and treatment of disease. Viking Global Increases Kite Pharma Position

Andreas Halvorsen's hedge fund firm Viking Global has filed a 13G with the SEC regarding Kite Pharma (KITE).  Per the filing, Viking now owns 6.1% of the company with over 2.68 million shares.

This is up from the 677,334 shares they owned at the end of the second quarter.  The filing was made due to activity on September 25th.

Per Google Finance, Kite Pharma is "a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company. The Company is focused on the development and commercialization of cancer immunotherapy products to eradicate cancer cells. The Company does this using its engineered autologous cell therapy (eACT), which is an approach to the treatment of cancer. eACT involves the genetic engineering of T cells to express either chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) or T cell receptors (TCRs). It is conducting a Phase II clinical trial of a TCR-based therapy and multiple Phase I-IIa clinical trials of CAR- and TCR-based therapies. Viking Global Boosts Mallinckrodt Position

Andreas Halvorsen's hedge fund firm Viking Global has filed a 13G with the SEC regarding its position in Mallinckrodt (MNK).  Per the filing, Viking now owns 4.9% of the company with over 5.72 million shares.

This is up slightly from the 5.41 million shares they owned at the end of the second quarter.  The filing was made due to activity on August 21st.
