The Wizard of Lies Movie Trailer: Bernie Madoff HBO Film

HBO has released a trailer for its new film The Wizard of Lies featuring Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer.  This new television movie tells the story of Bernie Madoff's infamous ponzi scheme. 

It premiers on May 20th on HBO and also features Hank Azaria, Alessandro Nivola, and Kristen Connolly, among others.

The Big Short ~ Movie Trailer (Based on Michael Lewis' Book)

Michael Lewis' popular book, The Big Short, has now made it to the big screen.  The first trailer of the movie has been released that brings the story of the financial crisis and the US housing short to life.

Here's the cast:

- Christian Bale as Michael Burry
- Steve Carrell as Steve Eisman
- Ryan Gosling as Greg Lippmann
- Brad Pitt as Ben Hockett

While you wait for it to be released, definitely check out Michael Lewis' book The Big Short if you haven't already.  It's based on a true story and is a fantastic read.

The Wolf of Wall Street Movie Trailer: Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey

The Wolf of Wall Street movie trailer was just released.  The movie is directed by Martin Scorsese and the screenplay is by Terence Winter (of Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire fame).  It features Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey, and Jonah Hill as the main actors.

We often like to highlight finance related movie trailers, but most of those films are dramas and serious in nature.  The Wolf on Wall Street looks to be comedic to a degree and full of antics, as it is based on Jordan Belfort's book, The Wolf of Wall Street.  In it, he writes about manipulating stocks in the 1990's at a brokerage firm.

If you like Lamborghini Countaches, Ferrari Testarossas, a new song from Kanye West, and suits from the 90's, then this trailer is for you.  In essence, this film is somewhat like the movie Boiler Room and should certainly enhance the great reputation Wall Street has with the rest of America /sarcasm.

Arbitrage Movie Trailer: Film About Hedge Fund Manager Played By Richard Gere

We're posting up the trailer from the upcoming movie Arbitrage.  Directed by Nicholas Jarecki, it stars Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, Brit Marling, Tim Roth, and Nate Parker.  The trailer looks like it also features a cameo by CNBC's Maria Bartiromo.  The movie will be released on September 14th, 2012.

Gere plays a hedge fund manager who is desperate to sell his trading empire before the depth of his fraud is exposed, but he makes an error that forces him to turn to an unlikely person for help.

The trailer makes it look like the film is less about finance and more about a drama and homicide case.  The film's tagline is Arbitrage: Power is the Best Alibi.

Confidence Game Trailer: Documentary About Bear Sterns' Final Week

Below is the Confidence Game movie trailer, a documentary about the final week of Bear Stearns before its collapse during the financial crisis.

The film is directed by Nick Verbitsky and features interviews with former employees, whistleblowers, as well as Bryan Burrough, William D. Cohan, and Andrew Ross Sorkin.

Margin Call Movie Trailer: New Film About the Financial Crisis

Below is the movie trailer for the new financial film, Margin Call. It will be in theaters on October 21st, 2011 and features actors such as Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons, Demi Moore, Stanley Tucci, Paul Bettany, Simon Baker, and Zachary Quinto.

The movie is about the beginning stages of the financial crisis as it chronicles the final 24 hours of Lehman Brothers and is filmed from the viewpoint of people working at the (now extinct) Wall Street investment bank. The film is written and directed by J.C. Chandor.

While this movie probably won't top the legendary movie, Wall Street, hopefully Margin Call is at least better than Wall Street 2.

Wall Street 2 The Movie: February 2010 With Michael Douglas & Shia LaBeouf

We're starting to get more concrete details regarding the release of Wall Street 2 the movie. Back in April, we touched on the fact that the movie was green to go and will mark the return of Michael Douglass as Gordon Gekko and Oliver Stone directing. Unfortunately, Charlie Sheen's character Bud Fox will not be making another appearance. Just recently though, it was revealed that Shia LaBeouf and Javier Bardem are now official cast members.

LaBeouf (who you will see parading around in Transformers 2) will play a young trader who is engaged to Gekko's daughter, while Josh Brolin (*updated) will play the 'villain' role as a (wait for it...) hedge fund manager. Ah yes the hedge fund manager profession continues to have a sterling reputation (sarcasm). The only role yet to be filled seems to be that of Gekko's daughter. They will begin filming in August and are shooting for a February 2010 release date. Director Oliver Stone has already scouted various areas to shoot including the New York Stock Exchange. Allan Loeb is writing the script and you may know his work from other movies 21 and Things We Lost In The Fire.

If you don't want to know the general plot line, then don't read any further...


Apparently the film will start with Gekko's emergence from prison as he rebuilds his career over 20 years later. Shia LaBeouf's character is a trader who is engaged to Gekko's daughter and wants to make it to the 'big leagues' on Wall Street. In order to do so, he makes a pact with Gekko in exchange for helping Gekko repair his relationship with his daughter.

The film will have a modern feel as its timeline will span from June 2008 and into the various bailouts. Bardem's character will be a villain hedge fund manager who apparently is the target of revenge by LaBeouf. The rest of the plot line (if there is more?) remains to be seen and we shall all have to wait with bated breathe. Minyanville has even come up with their own mini script of the new flick.

In order to prepare for such a spectacle, we'd recommend watching the original Wall Street in all of it's 1980's glory. You can pick up Wall Street on DVD here (20th Anniversary edition) and on Bluray here. We'd consider this an essential timepiece for anyone involved in markets as it has graced our previous list of gifts for those in finance.

Wall Street 2 the Movie

Greed is good.

I know there will be a few people excited about this news: The sequel to the movie Wall Street is now green to go. Fox recently was out saying that Oliver Stone is on board to direct, Michael Douglas will be back as Gordon Gekko, and they are negotiating with Shia LeBeouf for a new 'Bud Fox' style of character, this time as a Wall Street trader. The focus of the film will stay on Gekko's character, but any details beyond that are scarce.

This sequel has been on again and off again, but now it looks to be given the green light for sure and Fox hopes to starting shooting sometime in the summer. Originally, the film was being tossed around with the title "Money Never Sleeps," but now will apparently just be titled "Wall Street 2."

For those of you who have never seen the original, it's a classic and you need to definitely watch it in all it's 80's glory. You can pick up Wall Street on DVD here (20th Anniversary edition) and on Bluray here. This is an essential flick for anyone involved in markets and graced our list of gifts for those in finance.
